The word eczema refers to a broad range of conditions that begin as spongiotic dermatitis and

may progress to a lichenified stage. Histologically, the hallmark of all eczematous eruptions is a

serous exudate between cells of the epidermis (spongiosis), with an underlying dermal perivascular lymphoid infiltrate and exocytosis (lymphocytes noted within spongiotic foci in the epidermis).
