Introduction:Hernia is a defect in the muscle layers of the aponeurotic abdominal wall that is large enough to allow intra-abdominal structures to a hernia sac which is a diverticulum. One of herniorrhaphy complications, is postoperative pain. Alpha receptor agonists such as clonidine and tizanidine, have analgesic and sedative properties that may be useful as drugs in general anesthesia and spinal anesthesia. More studies on the alpha receptor agonist clonidine is taken on. In this study, the effects of oral tizanidine on pain after herniorrhaphy were studied.
Methods: The participants in the study were 100 patients undergoing herniorrhaphy. 4 mg (n =50) of oral tizanidine and normal saline (n = 50) were randomly given to the patients. Systolic and diastolic pressure, heart rate and arterial oxygen saturation at 5, 10, 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes during operation and severity of pain at time zero, 1, 6 and 24 hours after surgery, were studied.
