Abstract

Abstract
Background: Suicide is considered as one of the most important health issues in Ilam province especially after the post-war era. At present, Ilam province has the highest incidence rate of suicide in Iran, and has gained the attention of researchers and regional and national health authorities.
Methods: The statistical population included all registered suicide and attempted suicide cases that referred to Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital, Ilam during 2016. The total number of registered cases that were evaluated was 582.
Results: Results of the study showed a female predominance with highest rate for those aged 15-24 years. Based on educational history, individuals with high school diploma demonstrated the highest suicide rate, while most attempted suicides were observed among housewives. Most suicides took place at home and tablets were the mean by which most of the suicides were made. In most of the cases the reason behind the suicide was unknown. The highest rate of attempted suicide was seen in individuals with a negative medical history and absence of any previous suicidal intentions.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it is possible to reduce suicide among individuals by various means such as teaching life skills, identifying cases with family violence, providing strategies for solving the family problems, introducing supportive organization to the clients, and referral of the cases to related supportive organizations.

Abstract

Background: Evidence based dentistry is a method of integrating research knowledge into daily clinical practice. This study was done with the aim of analysis of general dentists’ knowledge and attitude in regard to evidence based dentistry in Ardabil city.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, knowledge and attitude of general dentists were assessed by means of a self-administered questionnaire. The percentage  of dentists’ answers to knowledge and attitude questions were reported and its correlations with age, sex, years of practice, place of practice and education were analyzed by -test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient and Analysis of variance, respectively.
Results: The average score of knowledge of Ardabil dentists was 9.17±4.36 and the average score of attitude was 23.53±4.8. There were no statistical correlations between the scores of knowledge and attitude with age (knowledge: p=0.13, attitude: p=0.06), sex (knowledge: p=0.25, attitude: p=0.31), place of practice (knowledge: p=0.25, attitude: p= 0.66), years of practice (knowledge: p=0.13, attitude: p=0.06) and the university of graduation (knowledge: p=0.15, attitude: p=0.69).
Conclusion: Overall knowledge of Ardabil’s general dentists in regard to evidence based dentistry was not satisfactory but there were no negative attitudes in this respect.

Abstract

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death all around the world with an estimated 1.2 million new cases and a half million deaths each year. Although some curing methods such as surgery and chemotherapy are used in the early stage of CRC, targeted therapy is one of the principal modes of cancer treatment that could be a reliable and noninvasive strategy. It seems that Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) which are undifferentiated and multipotent with the ability to self-renew and differentiate into several distinct cell lineages, are emerging as a targeted anticancer agent and exert their biological and therapeutical activity through immune system modulation and release of cytokines and chemokines to the tumor site. These cells also play a significant role as a carrier to delivery drug to the primary site or metastasis of tumors. There are some studies on MSC`s potential to destroy tumors by inhibition of proliferation and induction of apoptosis. In contrast, tumor tendency is one of the most important characteristics of MSCs in which Adipose Derived MSCs (ADSCs) are the cause of tumor growth and metastasis. Furthermore, obesity indicated that increase of adipose tissue and ADSCs are in association with colon and breast cancers. Therefore, the double-edge sword role of MSCs is revealed as a therapeutic agent.

Abstract

Background: Fatigue is common after chronic stroke, which may cause upper extremity sensory-motor dysfunction, as well as decreased independence in activities of daily living (ADLs) and participation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of upper extremity exercises based on fatigue prediction on sensory-motor functions and ADLs in subjects with chronic stroke.
Methods: This is a pilot study. Twenty subjects with chronic stroke (11 male and 9 female) with mean age of 56±14.09 years and mean time since the stroke of 71.05±53.5 months were randomly assigned to either the control group (receiving conventional rehabilitation) or intervention group (receiving unimanual exercises based on fatigue prediction) using the Kinect Upper extremity motor function. Fine and gross manual dexterity, grip strength, shoulder and elbow proprioception, independence in ADLs, participation, and fatigue severity were assessed before the interventions, after the interventions (6 week, each weak 3 session, for 45 minute) and 6 weeks following the completion of the interventions (i.e. follow up).
Result: In both control and intervention groups, a significant improvement was observed in all assessments (P≤0.05), except for independence in ADLs. Moreover, the decrease in fatigue severity and improvement in fine manual dexterity was significantly greater in the intervention group compared with the control group (P≤0.05).
Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that upper extremity exercises based on fatigue prediction led to an improvement in upper extremity sensory-motor functions, manual dexterity, and participation as well as a decrease in fatigue severity in subjects with chronic stroke.
