Abstract
Khwaja Rashid al-Din Fazlullah Hamadani (648-718 AH) was one of the most educated and elite officials of the Mongol period. Due to his medical profession, Khwaja Rashid al-Din paid special attention to establishing hospitals in Tabriz and other cities, such as Hamedan. This research aims to identify the use of skilled physicians, Chinese medicine, medicines, and essential oils for treatment at Rabe Rashidi Hospital and Khwaja's.
The present study is descriptive-analytical. First, information was collected through a literature review, and then data analysis was conducted.
Khwaja, as a skilled physician, made significant efforts in the establishment of (the foundation of) Rabe Rashidi, a scientific and educational organization. Doctors not only dealt with medical matters, but were also engaged in education and teaching. Due to the connection with China, attention was paid to Chinese medicine as one of the advanced sciences in Rabe Rashidi, which was taught practically and theoretically. Chinese books on this subject were translated, and Chinese medicines were used in the treatment of patients in Rashidiyeh.
Conclusion: Rab'e Rashidiyeh was considered one of the prestigious medical institutions during the Mongol period. The method of teaching medicine in this place was unprecedented until then. For the first time, we are witnessing an organized system of what is common in medical schools today.
