Abstract
Background: Forensic dentistry, as a branch of forensic and criminal sciences, plays a pivotal role in identifying individuals, determining time and cause of death, and investigating crimes. Given the unique characteristics of teeth and their high resistance to environmental factors, this field is considered as one of the most reliable scientific tools in the criminal justice process. This study aims to examine various functions of forensic dentistry in scientific crime detection and to analyze its position within the legal system.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive-analytical approach, based on library research and scientific documents.
Conclusion: The review indicated that forensic dentistry can be utilized in multiple areas, including identifying victims of mass disasters, matching dental records with human remains, analyzing bite marks in criminal cases, and estimating the age of individuals, particularly children and unidentified offenders. International experiences also show that the use of advanced imaging techniques and dental analysis software significantly improves the accuracy and speed of identification.
Results: Findings suggest that forensic dentistry plays a decisive role in scientific crime detection and enhancing the accuracy of legal proceedings. However, in Iran, this field has not yet been fully institutionalized and requires the development of specialized training, strengthening of laboratory infrastructure, and enhanced cooperation between judicial authorities and scientific centers. Leveraging experiences from leading countries can facilitate the expansion and practical implementation of forensic dentistry within Iran’s criminal justice system.
