Abstract
Background: Studies on hospital crisis management during COVID-19 reveal that healthcare systems, based on organizational conditions and resources, have implemented health strategies to enhance organizational resilience in combating the pandemic. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital compared to five selected hospitals from China, the United States, France, Australia, and Egypt. In addition to reviewing the performance of the selected hospitals and their proposed strategies, this study examines the actions of these countries to assess not only the governments’ ability to manage the crisis but also the scientific and managerial capacity of Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital in countries that have not experienced sanctions.
Methods: This applied research was conducted using a qualitative, comparative-analytical approach. The “George F. Brady” comparative method consisted of four stages: description, interpretation, juxtaposition, and comparison. The countries were selected based on their level of preparedness in crisis management and the outcomes of their responses. The hospitals from each country were chosen based on their speed of response and organizational resilience to compare with Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital.
Results: The findings of this research indicate that the actions of Iran and the selected countries in combating the pandemic were aligned with WHO guidelines. However, due to the sanctions and the resulting economic impacts in Iran, different approaches were observed regarding economic support for businesses. In terms of hospital management actions, the performance of Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital and the selected hospitals was closely aligned in seven areas: infection prevention and control, screening and triage, provision of equipment and human resources, telemedicine, technology and information, occupational burnout, and training.
Conclusion: The review of the selected countries and hospitals in this study demonstrates that the response to the pandemic should be examined from two distinct dimensions. The first dimension is the hospital’s managerial actions, which help reduce transmission and reflect internal organizational management and the scientific capacity of specialists. The second dimension is countries’ actions in combating and containing the pandemic.
