Abstract
Background: Suicide is one of the important issues in the field of mental health, especially among medical students as the most vulnerable group in this field. Investigating the causes and context of suicide is of double importance because medical students are active members of society. The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of self-differentiation in the relationship between suicidal thoughts and help-seeking behavior in medical students.
Methods: The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the fundamental type and with the data collection method, it was descriptive-correlational based on structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the study included all medical students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2024. From the statistical population, 205 people were selected using the convenience sampling method and responded to the Beck Standard Suicidality Scale (1993), the Short Form of Self-Differentiation (2011), and the Short Form of Attitudes Towards Psychological Help-Seeking Scale by Fisher and Farina (1995) using an online survey form. In order to analyze the data at the inferential statistical level, structural equation modeling and Bootstrap test were used in SPSS and Amos statistical software versions 24.
Results: The results showed that the research model had a good fit, suicidal ideation had a negative and significant direct effect on help-seeking behavior (β = -0.210, p = 0.008) and differentiation (β = -0.204, p = 0.010). Meanwhile, differentiation had a positive and significant direct effect on help-seeking behavior (β = 0.232, p = 0.009). Also, the indirect effect of suicidal ideation on help-seeking behavior was negatively significant (β = -0.047, p = 0.001). This means that differentiation plays a mediating role in the relationship between suicidal ideation and help-seeking behavior.
Conclusion: According to the findings of the present study, self-differentiation training can be considered as a strategy to reduce the anxiety level of medical students with mood disorders and also to increase their ability to employ and modify help-seeking behaviors and efficient coping strategies, in order to create an effective step towards reducing the suicide rate in these individuals.
