Abstract
Background: Breast cancer is currently recognized as one of the leading causes of death among women in developing countries. One of the fundamental concepts associated with breast cancer is functional disability in patients, which refers to the impairment of functioning in one or more aspects of life due to the disease in patients. High rates of functional disability are associated with mortality rates in women with breast cancer. Accordingly this study aimed to investigate the relationship between psychological distress and functional disability in breast cancer patients, with the mediating role of a health-promoting lifestyle.
Methods: The research design was correlational, utilizing a path analysis modelling approach. The study population included all women undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer at Imam Ali Hospital in Karaj during 2023-2024. From this population, 255 participants were selected using convenience sampling. The research instruments consisted of the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile Questionnaire by Walker et al. (1987), the Self-Handicapping Scale by Berglas and Jones (1978), and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (2002). Data were analyzed using path analysis.
Results: The findings revealed that a health-promoting lifestyle mediates the relationship between psychological distress and functional disability. Additionally, direct relationships between psychological distress and functional disability, psychological distress and a health-promoting lifestyle, and a health-promoting lifestyle and functional disability were confirmed.
Conclusion: Based on these findings, psychological distress and a health-promoting lifestyle play significant roles in the functional disability of breast cancer patients. The results of this study emphasize the importance of integrating health-promoting lifestyle interventions into the clinical care of patients with breast cancer. Healthcare providers should consider strategies that promote physical activity, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and effective stress management in treatment programs. Tailoring these interventions to individual needs can increase their effectiveness and support better functional outcomes. Therefore, therapeutic interventions targeting functional disability in breast cancer patients should prioritize these variables.
