Abstract
Background: As old age is associated with many physical and psychological problems, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of emotion regulation training on reducing symptoms of pain perception and psychological cohesion in the elderly.
Methods: The present study was a semi-experimental study with a pretest-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population included elderly people over 65 years of age in Tehran in 2024, of whom 30 were selected using convenience sampling and inclusion criteria and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group). The research tools included the McGill Pain Questionnaire and the Antonsky Psychological Cohesion Questionnaire. The experimental group received the intervention in 8 sessions (90-minute), and the control group did not receive such training. Finally, the data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance using SPSS-24 software.
Findings: The results of the analysis of covariance showed a significant difference between the control and experimental groups (P=0.001). Therefore, it can be said that emotion regulation training based on the Gross model was effective in reducing symptoms of pain perception (39.21) and increasing psychological cohesion (19.03).
Conclusion: The results showed that emotion regulation training can be effective in reducing symptoms of pain perception and increasing psychological cohesion in elderly people, . Ttherefore it is recommended that geriatric health professionals pay special attention to this treatment.
