Abstract
Background: Bisphosphonates are widely used in the treatment of various metabolic bone diseases and certain cancers. However, one of their major adverse effects is medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), which requires serious attention in dental care. Previous studies have shown that the level of knowledge of dental students in this field is not sufficient, and this can lead to clinical errors and serious complications for patients. This study aimed to assess the awareness among final-year dental students at Tehran universities of Medical Sciences regarding dental considerations in patients receiving bisphosphonate therapy.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year. The study population included all final-year dental students of Shahid Beheshti, Tehran, and Islamic Azad universities, and a total of 219 students were included. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire consisting of demographic questions and 13 multiple-choice items covering knowledge about the definition, complications, risk factors, treatment, and dental management of patients receiving bisphosphonates. Data was analyzed using ANOVA, Tukey, and one-sample t-test and SPSS software.
Results: A total of 219 dental students (46.1% female, 53.9% male) participated in this study. The mean knowledge scores of dental students of Shahid Beheshti, Tehran, and Islamic Azad universities were 8.12, 7.79, and 6.98 respectively. The difference between Tehran and Shahid Beheshti universities was not significant. However, the differences between Islamic Azad university and Tehran and Shahid Beheshti universities were significant. Based on the One-sample t-test results, the knowledge level of students in all three universities was significantly higher than the average level. However, the mean knowledge level of students at Islamic Azad university was significantly lower than the other universities.
Conclusion: The findings revealed that dental students at Tehran universities of Medical Sciences had a good level of awareness regarding MRONJ. Considering the importance of adequate knowledge in preventing complications such MRONJ in patients receiving bisphosphonates, the results of this study show that the need to strengthen education related to this topic in dental curricula, especially in Islamic Azad University, is completely necessary.
